It’s touched visitors in Naples, Italy; Brussels, Belgium – and now Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is making magic in the stunning venue of St Mary’s in York for its UK premiere.
This unique exhibition allows you to ‘step into the paintings’ through the art of modern technology. State-of-the-art projectors display a full 360 degree experience, while music and animations tantalise your senses.
I stepped inside to get a taste of it for myself.
It was no surprise that the exhibition’s opening was slightly delayed – the amount of work and technology that’s gone in to creating this experience is mind blowing. As is the entire thing. When you walk through the curtains that lead into the main room, you’re immediately transported into – for lack of a better description – another world. It’s quite literally like being inside Van Gogh’s artwork – especially when the projections create the illusion of the entire room being painted all around you.
As a massive self-proclaimed geek, I personally found it very touching to see how developments in technology have enhanced art from the 1800s and transformed it into brand-new art more than 100 years later. Not only that, but the use of VR – and the fact that it’s quite literally an entirely new experience that no one will have seen before – makes it attractive to all ages and demographics.
Whether you choose to sit or stand, and whether you’re familiar with Van Gogh’s works or you just know him as the guy that chopped his ear off, this immersive show will impress, touch, and inspire you.
Tickets are £13 for adults, £11 for concessions and £9 for children. The exhibition is open every day from 10am, with last entries admitted one hour before closing.
