When she volunteered to help find a missing golden labradoodle back in July, Mandy Butler could never have imagined she would soon be heading up an elite team of dog rescuers as part of York’s first permanent rescue hub.
Mandy was called into action by the family of Arlo who had been missing for over a month in York. She immediately got to work, setting up social media groups to spread awareness of the issue whilst also giving out advice on how best to approach a dog who was likely to be stressed and scared.
Once the first few sightings came in, Mandy ensured the entire area was “covered with cameras, scent trails, and feed stations.” She says, “He followed the next trail to our trap which was laden with food for him and within a few minutes he entered — which allowed us to remotely close the trap door and make him safe.”
Mandy explains what really brought Arlo home was, “The community support of postering and calling in sightings.” What was even more surprising was that the support of York’s community didn’t stop there— their relentless work calling in sightings was soon transformed into a spirit of overwhelming generosity.
After hearing of Arlo’s safe return “The community donated towards our costs and the decision was made to use funds to buy and supply a full kit to York so that any other missing dogs had the equipment available immediately.” As a direct result, Team Arlo — York’s first permanent dog rescue hub— was born.
Thanks to those generous contributions the infrastructure is now in place so that no dog will ever be lost for as long as Arlo ever again. Mandy tells me that already — “It has been used numerous times with success.”
