We reached out to everyone running to become the next MP for York Outer, here’s what they all had to say:
David Eadington, The Yorkshire Party
“While London and the South East take the lion’s share of investment, our communities in Yorkshire are left to suffer. Public spending in London is £14,500 per person. But in Yorkshire it’s just £11,900 per person – that’s a shortfall of over £14 billion, every year, across Yorkshire. The Yorkshire Party is standing up for fair funding through a Yorkshire Regional Parliament, so that we can control our own local affairs. Issues in York which I believe are important, are improving rail links to Leeds and beyond and a new rail station for Haxby, access to an NHS dentist for all, proper cycle ways with traffic segregation and giving everyone access to green spaces through providing many more allotments. Finally, good luck to all the other candidates who are participating in our democracy.”
Julian Sturdy, Conservative
“After fourteen years as your Member of Parliament, I am seeking re-election to continue the work we have started. At the last election, we set out a plan for York, we stuck with it — and it’s paying off. But what happens next comes down to you.
From jobs to growth, roads to rail links, York Outer is in a much stronger position today.
Since the last election alone, we have secured hundreds of millions of pounds of funding to Dual the outer ring road from Wetherby Road to Hopgrove; Build a new railway station at Haxby; open a Community Diagnostics Centre at Askham Bar; rebuild Hempland Primary School in Heworth, upgrade York District Hospital’s Accident and Emergency department and much more.
Let’s see our plan through and build a brighter future for local families and a secure future for the country.”
Michael Kearney, Green Party
“This election is one of the most important of our times – public services are crumbling, living standards falling and our climate is deteriorating. Only the Greens are offering the real hope and real change that we need.
I’m honoured to be standing for the Green Party in York Outer. Having lived in York all my adult life and worked in schools across the city, I have a deep understanding of the issues facing people and families. The damage caused by the Conservatives and Labour to our schools and NHS are a key reason I am standing in this election, not because I am a career politician like the others.
Only a vote for the Greens will be a vote to end NHS privatisation; for NHS dentists for all; bringing water back into public ownership and ending the scandal of sewage dumping; investing in the Green economy to create new, well-paid jobs; and tackling the climate crisis.”
Darren Borrows, Independent
“Darren’s campaign message is, Truth; about time
After identifying a possible mistake in physics in 2015, he has been trying to get the science establishment to consider the possibility they’ve overlooked something simple and disprove an alternate interpretation of Albert Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity.
First he gave the idea away to 50 physicists. When this had only one response who urged him to press on himself, he tried to publish and make contact with leaders in the physics world. He did. They never got back in touch.
Nine years of trying has left him with the conclusion no one is interested in conceding there may be an error at the centre of their long established model.
However, many with some maths ability will be able to expose it for themselves.
The conclusion changes our view on the universe. The importance for everyone means it cannot continue to be dismissed. It has to be fought for. Even if the alternate interpretation can be disproved.
Darren’s aim is to go to Westminster to push the academic establishment to take action for the people of this country.”
Andrew Hollyer, Liberal Democrat
“During this campaign the issue that has come up in conversations with residents most often is concern about getting NHS treatment when you need it. Long waits for a GP appointment are unacceptable and access to NHS dentistry is fast disappearing.
Liberal Democrats have a plan to give patients a right to see their GP within a week, or within 24 hours if it’s urgent. This will be delivered by increasing the number of GPs by 8,000.
I have personal experience of the importance of getting treatment quickly. When I was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, it was after a year of delayed GP appointments. It was only caught when a nurse at the practice sent me straight to A&E. I was lucky as an amazing team of doctors and nurses cured me – but too many are not.
I have been proud to represent Haxby & Wigginton on the council since 2019. I have a track record of getting things done for our community, such as securing investment in local infrastructure, and if elected I will be a champion for all villages and communities.”
Luke Charters, Labour
“As a local dad, I’m standing to be our MP.
I’ve lived across the constituency in Haxby, Strensall and Osbaldwick. I rely on York Outer’s services: I have spent hours in York A&E with my toddler; found it challenging to find affordable childcare for my son and found it difficult to secure GP appointments.
I attended Huntington School, after which I went on to have a career at the Bank of England protecting our currency and working to protect fraud victims.
I want to clean up York’s rivers, ensure it is easy for residents to access healthcare and that we have sufficient neighbourhood policing. I promise to be the active, constituency first MP that York Outer deserves and needs.
I came second here in 2017, where I received over 21,000 votes compared with the Lib Dems on just 6,000. Recent polls also show that only Labour can beat the Conservatives here.
After 14 long years of Tory chaos, it’s time to turn the page.”
Hal Mayne, Independent
“I’m standing to help break the disastrous national parties rule, which I believe, has led to the grinding down of our nation over the last 50 years.
Whilst national party candidates will have to serve the dictates of their party, as an independent I am only here to serve you, the people of York outer. I am York born and bred, and with my twin brother Leo Mayne standing in York central, I hope to bring about a real change for York, and the nation.
I will fight the fuel companies whose high prices have led to the current cost of living crisis.
I will fight the lack of proper taxation of multinational corporations.
I will fight the mismanagement of our defences and lack of support for our troops.
I am hoping to publish my manifesto at my website on the 19th.
Most importantly I want to champion the cause of all our people in York outer who have been damaged by the MRNA jab. If you’ve been harmed by the jab and would like to share your story, please contact me at MyVoiceMRNA@gmail.com.”
Keith Hayden, Independent
“We may think our nation is not just in a mess, but heading for unknown disasters:
wars and their fallout, climate issues, the cost of living, the explosion of knife crime, the huge challenges for the many selfless NHS staff, emergency services and those working in education.
As a retired teacher I am standing as an independent candidate. I long for a restoration to Christian values in our society based on the Bible:
1) Recognising the sanctity of human life,
2) Respecting marriage, family and caring for others
3) Honouring our responsibilities within our communities.
Thank God that 80 years ago as a nation we were miraculously rescued from disaster when King George VI, the father of our late Queen Elizabeth II, called national days of prayer.
Everyone is special; we are all uniquely made in God’s image! There is HOPE!”
John Crispin-Bailey, Reform UK.
“Change is not enough – Britain needs reform. I was born and raised in this constituency. As a local parish councilor I am as passionate about local issues as I am about Westminster reform. The broader picture of politics in this country is both a concern and an opportunity for all of our communities.
I believe that it is time to break the monopoly of establishment Westminster parties and the constant musical chairs of Conservative and Labour in government and opposition. Too many people say they will not vote now or never vote at all. The people of York deserve a fresh choice and for every voice to be heard. Reform will introduce PR voting to make sure those voices are never ignored again.
Aside from electoral reform, we are committed to taking families, workers, and pensioners out of the cost of living crisis, with zero income tax on the first £20k of income, a new approach to utilities, no more energy price shocks or sewage in rivers. A vote for Reform on the 4th of July will send a message to Westminster, because change is not enough, we need reform!”
