Summer is almost here in the UK, which represents a great opportunity for you to try a new sport, whether it’s for the social side or to improve your fitness. Here are four activities you may want to give a go in York.
Cycling

The Tour de Yorkshire took place last month and was won by Chris Lawless. Watching some of the best cyclists in the world may have inspired you to jump on a bike, even if you have never done so before. Cycling up hills can be gruelling, but you don’t need to take on some of the highest peaks in Yorkshire. Instead, there are many safe flat routes in York where you can cycle. The bike you take will all depend on how serious you want to take your cycling. You can choose a light professional bike that you may be used to seeing in one of the tour races, or you may prefer to purchase a more conventional mountain bike. Either way, it could turn out to be the best thing you ever buy.
Darts
Although darts is an indoor sport, there are many summer leagues in York if you fancy playing competitively. The York Open Darts League has competitions available for all different levels. Whether you are looking to take part in a singles tournament or join a team, you will find what you need. Once the PDC World Darts Championship begins in December in London, where Michael van Gerwen is the 6/5 favourite in the darts betting to lift the trophy again, you will appreciate exactly how good the world’s elite players are. Who knows, it could be you joining the circuit next year if you’re a natural at the sport.
Horse Riding

Horse racing is engraved in history in York as the racecourse in the city is one of the best Flat courses in the country and hosts the International Stakes, which was won last year by Roaring Lion. Jumping on a horse could be a daunting experience; however, there are numerous riding schools that can ensure it’s a safe activity. You don’t need to have aspirations to be a jockey to ride a horse; it’s something that can be a great thrill, so if you feel brave, give it a go this summer.
Running
One of the biggest advantages of taking up running as a sport to get fit or just for fun is that there is no cost involved. All you need to a pair of trainers and you can enjoy running around some of the best sites in York. Those who live here are lucky that there’s a catalogue of running routes. If you want something to aim for, you can enter an official 10k run in the city, which are always popular and a great way to raise some money for charity too.
Remember to have fun in all the sporting activities you try, and don’t be afraid to give something new a go as you may be surprised by how much you like it.
