First baby born in York Hospital’s SCBU celebrates 40th birthday with super fundraiser

One of the first babies to be born and nursed back to health in the York Special Care Baby Unit has just celebrated his 40th Birthday.

Jamie Collins weighed only 1lb 9oz (the same amount as a bag of sugar) when he was born 14-weeks early in the autumn of 1983. In the years since, Jamie has built a successful decade-long career in the NHS. He now works just around the corner as a Medical Secretary in the Trust’s dermatology department

In order to give back to the life-changing help he received, Jamie fundraised more than £800s

worth of donations from well-wishers at his 40th birthday celebrations.

He said: “I wanted to give back to SCBU as they did so much for me 40 years ago, without them, I would not be here.”

Reflecting on the occasion, mum June Collins explained: “It’s been very emotional looking back through old photos. If anyone remembers Jamie, I would like to let them know how well he has done and thank them for all they did.”

On accepting the donation, neo-natal support worker Anita Brown thanked Jamie for his generosity and wished him well for his fortieth year.

“It is just so wonderful to know Jamie and his family were helped all those years ago at SCBU.”
