According to the most recent findings from the Gambling Commission, there are 152 casinos in Great Britain, marking an increase of one venue from the report prior. Gambling is a popular activity in our country from north to south, with the total gross gambling yield of the country standing at £14.5 billion at the time of the report. But, unfortunately, for us residents of York who fancy testing our luck on the spin or challenging the dealer in a game of cards, there simply isn’t a traditional casino in or around the city of York.
That’s not to say that the people of York aren’t enjoying some gambling games whenever they feel like it, but to experience the atmosphere in person or make an occasion out of the evening, a Yorkie must travel further afield.
The casino experience of York

The closest thing that residents of York have to a brick-and-mortar casino is the venue down High Ousegate – with the ‘casino’ aspect of its name used quite loosely. It’s a nice enough venue with friendly staff and various promotions, but it’s primarily a slot machine house. With sparingly few other options in the enclosed space, it doesn’t exactly provide the lavish experience commonly associated with a day or night at the casino.
While remaining in York, the closest thing that Yorkies get to a fully-fledged casino experience is the online casino. The biggest draw is the huge range of classic and new games which has people who want to hit the slots turn to their app or web browser rather than venture to the venue in York. Titles like Buffalo Re-Spin, Gods of Olympus Megaways, Tiki Treasures, and Raging Rhino offer many new ways to play slots while the live casino section can deliver a more authentic way to play classic casino games like roulette and blackjack.
The nearest casino is an hour away

For the nearest high-quality casino experience from York, you’ll be looking at about an hour drive southwest or about half-an-hour on the train from York Station to Leeds. In the city, there are two major casinos which draw crowds from all over the north of England. Napoleons Casino is situated on Bingley Street, and Grosvenor Casino is just over the way on Wellington Bridge Street, both of which are clearly visible from the A65.
According to the reviews submitted on both venues, Napoleon Casino just edges its rival, Grosvenor Casino, but both have earned stellar ratings overall at four-and-a-half stars each. The Bingley Street venue boasts a very well-rated restaurant at affordable prices as well as the likes of roulette, three-card poker, blackjack, and slots on its gaming floor. The 30-year-old casino has also recently opened up its new outdoor gaming terrace.
The Grosvenor Casino prides itself on its offering of poker and slots as well as its bar and grill while being on the same site as Mantell’s Restaurant. The venue is very well set out, with hardwood floors and comfortable seating to complement its range of table games and electronic slots.
Despite there being so many casinos in Great Britain, the city of York is yet to have an authentic casino gaming venue. There are local slot machines, and anyone can access the modern online games, but as the centrepiece to an occasion or night out, Yorkies should consider taking a trip to Leeds.
