A holiday location that appears on many people’s bucket lists, Las Vegas boasts unrivalled attractions punctuated by glitz, glamour, and no shortage of neon. The Nevada city is a popular choice for once-in-a-lifetime stag do’s or even honeymoons.
But while little can match Vegas for gambling holidays, those seeking the thrill of the spin have more options than ever, without having to shell out as much for flights and accommodation thousands of miles away.
The casinos in Vegas feature lavish interiors and vast complexes that often include restaurants and hotels that deliver incredible guest experiences, but it’s becoming easier than ever before to sample an authentic gambling experience much closer to home, or even without leaving the home at all.
Here in York, there is no shortage of casino options available which, though perhaps not being able to boast the vast suites or gold and marble decor often found in Vegas, offer plenty of thrills and excitement. And the emergence of live dealer technology, and online providers famous for their vibrant and exciting games, means you could even create an authentic casino experience in your own lounge.
But is it really possible to replicate the full Vegas experience, including the restaurants and hotels, without travelling thousands of miles across the Atlantic?
The Food
The traditional culinary fare in Las Vegas is typically American. We’re talking big portions, plenty of cheese and a lot of stuff that’s probably not very good for you – but hey, isn’t that what holidays are for?
Among the foods recommended for visitors to Vegas is the dirty corn dirt dog, which is grilled street corn dressed in butter, lime, mayonnaise, crushed Cheetos, melted cheese, and cilantro.
Also on the Vegas list is macaroni and cheese carbonara, from Buddy V’s Risorante, and Italian food is certainly one department where the city of York can stand up to the competition.
If pasta or pizza is your preference, check out La Vecchia Scuola, on Low Petergate, or Buongiorno, on Acomb Wood Drive. Both offer incredible south Mediterranean dishes, including a mean mac and cheese that rivals anything Vegas can offer.
The hotels
We’ve already mentioned the lavish hotels that help make Las Vegas so special, and among those recommended by travel journalists is The Venetian Resort, featuring a luxurious spa, and The Cosmopolitan, which is marketed at younger visitors.
Now, we’re not going to pretend that York’s own accommodation can be considered in the same bracket as the decadent escapes of Vegas, but you can enjoy being pampered and waited on without heading for the Strip.
The Grand in York is known for its friendly staff, beautiful rooms and excellent facilities, and features a fully-equipped spa to help you relax, recuperate and recharge. And if you’re looking for something a little more high-octane, the City Apartments in the city centre are modern, spacious and located at the heart of York’s bar scene.
So, while York may not be able to promise the glamour and glitz of Las Vegas, you’d be surprised to learn that many of the staples that make the world’s casino capital such an appealing destination can be found a little closer to home.
