The Wilberforce Trust are one of York’s oldest charities— they’ve been providing specialist sensory services for those affected by sight loss since 1833! To learn a little more about the inspirational and rewarding work they do, empowering people to make their own choices and have control of their lives, we sat down with one of their experienced support workers. Here’s what Shaun had to say.
What inspired you to choose to work for the Wilberforce Trust? — what makes it special?
I loved that it was all about helping people to live independently.
What part of the week do you look forward to the most?
I like the 1-2-1 hours. The time we spend with individual people doing activities. Normal activities like going to the café, or the cinema— just normal daily things.
What part of your role do you think is the most important?
Helping people to be independent but keeping them safe at the same time. Encouraging people to try things they might not have thought to try, to have confidence to try something new.
Which memory/ achievement from working at the Trust are you most proud of?
Recently I have been the first person to support a new tenant, who had some challenging behaviour that some have found difficult, and I’ve built a good relationship with them.
What would you say to someone considering starting a career in care?
Just do it! There are challenges but you find your way. It’s rewarding and you meet and spend time with some really great people.
