Claire’s Tech Talk: 5 Websites You Have to Try Before You Die

In these days of social media, apps and God knows what else, it’s easy to forget about the humble website. You know, back in the day when we actually had to type a full web address into Internet Explorer? No word of a lie – there are actually still websites out there that aren’t part of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or Google. And I’ve found all three of them.

Nah, I joke. There’s at least seven.

Anyway, here are some of the best actual, real, traditional websites that you can explore for yourselves. You’re welcome.

Out of all the sites I’m going to talk about, this is the most impressive. The levels of coding, attention to detail, design, and everything else is absolutely outstanding. So what’s it about? Basically, computer security company Kaspersky have decided to explore genuine, scientifically-plausible predictions for our planet in 2050.

Brazil’s Sao Paulo in 2050, according to 2050.earth

The whole website is extremely interactive, allowing you to spin a skeleton-style globe around to discover which countries and cities have predictions. You can then click on some of these predictions and see real concept work as to what the area will look like – with more intricate clickable predictions on buildings, pavements, cars and more. If you’ve ever played the video game Detroit: Become Human, then it’s a bit like that.

It’s basically Google Earth. But in 2050. Check it out.

I feel like I’m reducing your IQ massively by going from a website that scientifically estimates the future of our planet to a website that tells you how to put together food from your fridge, but this bad boy needs to be shared.

Ever thought to yourself: “I need to go to the supermarket tonight because I’ve got nothing in, but I can’t be bothered”? Well, MyFridgeFood.com is here for you on those lazy nights.

Basically, unless you shop really sensibly and actually only buy exactly the items you need (who does that?), you’ll find this useful. For every leftover egg in the pack of 12 you bought when six would have sufficed; for every abandoned sachet of cous cous you crammed in the cupboard when you decided to try Moroccan cuisine but ended up going back to frozen pizza; and for every can of tomato soup that you stored for ‘emergencies’, there’s a recipe you can make. And My Fridge Food will tell give them to you.*

It’s like Ready Steady Cook, except there’s no Ainsley Harriot, or studio audience.

*Let me know how the Eggy Tomato Cous Cous tastes. Sounds interesting.

Here’s one for the geography pros – Geoguessr.com plops you onto a random path somewhere in the world via Google Earth, and you have to guess where. Simple as that.

There’s still something that’s somewhat mystical about having a first-person view of a country that you’ve never been to, or seen in the flesh. It’s not a Photoshopped travel catalogue picture of Central Park, it’s a real snapshot of people walking down 17th Avenue in Brooklyn.

Now, I’m amazing at geography. Providing it’s about a country that have performed in the Eurovision Song Contest between 1997-2009. I’ll tell you anything you want to know about ’02 winners Latvia, but don’t ask me about Venezuela. Unless they become honorary members of the Eurosong like Australia have. #EuropeIsAConstruct

Anyway, be warned: this site’s addictive. Whether you’re hooked on finding new locations to guess or you find yourself spending six hours walking down the road in Argentina, you won’t get off this one easily.

Also known as The Wayback Machine, Archive.org works as a bit of a Flux Capacitor for websites. Pop in a website of your choosing and there will be, most of the time, a cache (or twenty) of it from days gone by.

Your Local Link on the Wayback Machine from 2003

Whether you want to assess how your company’s progressed, take a trip down memory lane, or have a giggle at how basic some of the world’s most successful companies used to be, it’s an excellent site to check out. And even if you think your little company is too small to have been covered, have a look anyway. You’ll be amazed by how many websites have been frozen in time.

Great Scott.

SHAKESPEAREAN INSULT GENERATOR

Honestly, this is as good as it sounds.

If you’re at work and want to show your frustration to an annoying colleague without being put on disciplinary for inappropriate language, then get yourself here.

With unforgettable insults such as ‘you errant, sheep-biting bladder’, ‘you spongy, tickle-brained mumble-news’ and ‘you mammering, doghearted puttock’, you’re sure to cause a perfectly acceptable stir while also educating people with your extensive Shakespearean knowledge.

Don’t be a loggerheaded, full-gorged bugbear. Click the link and get yo’ insult on.

So there you have it. A bunch of websites that aren’t Facebook. Enjoy, and don’t waste too much time!
