This month sees the celebration of volunteers across the UK with Volunteers Week. Between the 1st-7th June, we take the opportunity to recognise the impactful contribution that volunteers make to local organisations and charities. And so, in light of Volunteers Week 2023, we thought we’d shout about local children’s charity, The Island.
The Island provides mentoring services to young people within York, who may be struggling with their social, emotional and mental health. Their volunteers play a significant role in assisting with the children’s self-development and learning, and this is mostly achieved through a range of recreational activities from playing board games to baking and everything in between.
The Island tailor their volunteering programme based on each mentee individually. Whilst one mentee may require a one-to-one mentorship, another might find they’re more comfortable in a group setting. There are currently 62 existing mentoring relationships supported by The Island and 36 mentees attending the group sessions!
So, if you’re a personable, friendly, approachable person who enjoys working with children and you’re looking for a way to give back to the community, The Island is always looking for volunteers. For more information on how to apply, please visit www.theislandyork.org.
