We hear from avid book reader and creative writer, Ben Robinson who shares his monthly book recommendations. Happy reading!
As the summer looms I always become excited about day trips to country parks, historical monuments, and medieval castles. With this in mind, here’s a selection of my favourite historical fiction books.
‘All The Light We Cannot See’
by Anthony Doerr – This book follows two young people in Europe throughout World War Two and their stories of loss and change. It captures the destruction of war, and the distance it put between loved ones.
‘Macbeth’
by William Shakespeare – Macbeth is undoubtedly one of the greatest plays ever written. It follows the turmoil of Scotland prior to, and throughout, the terrible reign of King Macbeth. For those of you wanting something dark and chilling, this is the book for you.
‘Wolf Hall’
by Hilary Mantel – Set between 1500 and 1535 this fictionalised biography follows the rise to prominence of Thomas Cromwell in the court of Henry VIII, as well as the fall of his court and all those who were part of it. This is a story of romance, betrayal, war, and power, all with the backdrop of a turbulent Tudor England.
