Everyone! Everyone! Chill out! We have some important news: The bright lights and fuzzy feeling of Christmas and New Year may be long gone, but that winter feeling isn’t leaving anytime soon…
To round off York’s winter celebrations, Make It York returns with the York Ice Trail 2022. From the 5th to the 6th of March, after being delayed a month due to the pandemic, the York Ice Trail brings a convoy of distinct and unique ice sculptures, this year the theme being ‘Around the World’. And lo and behold, the first set of sculptures have been unveiled, and in order to break the ice, we at Your Local Link must say that they do look pretty ‘cool’…
Many locations around York are using the weekend to ice things up. There will be close to 40 ice sculptures splattered around the city. Middletons Hotel will turn its grounds into a wonderland with four gorgeous sculptures of a giant set of playing cards, pink flamingos and curated ‘Drink Me’ cocktails. Make sure to also stop by the Alice in Wonderland themed afternoon tea at the hotel and sit by beautiful sculptures of the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit and the Mad Hatters Tea Party.
In order to celebrate this year’s theme of ‘Around The World’ York BID have kindly donated seven sculptures to this year’s Ice Trail – one for each continent of the world. The City of York council has also carved their spot in the Ice Trail with their ‘York Skyline’ which will show off the city in Ice form.
For any future budding ice sculptors or anyone who simply wants to have a go at ice carving, you must make sure to stop by St Sampson’s Square, as Icebox, the company responsible for creating the ice sculptures, will be performing live ice sculptures for people to watch, with further opportunities to try sculpting ice yourself on Parliament Street’s graffiti wall.
It’s not just ‘Around The World’ that’s getting the spotlight, but several Disney films are getting their time to shine with sculptures based on hit movies like ‘Finding Nemo’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Frozen’, ‘Ratatouille’ and ‘The Lion King’, perfect for group photos or pics to take with little ones.
Sarah Loftus, Managing Director at Make It York, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing back the much-loved York Ice Trail event for 2022, and although slightly later than planned, it will be worth the wait! After a couple of years where many of us haven’t been able to travel too far, this year’s theme will bring sculptures inspired from ‘around the world’ to the streets of York. There are over 40 ice sculptures to find this year, which have all been kindly sponsored by local businesses.”
