Archbishop of York calls for Free School Meal support

“There are children at school today who are hungry and falling behind” says Stephen Cottrell, the Archbishop of York.

The Archbishop is calling for residents and businesses to support the City Council’s new ‘One City, for all’ plan. He says “This is one way in which we can make a significant difference.” The plan contains a pledge to start the journey towards becoming an anti-poverty city.

The Council say that the implementation of free school meals on a universal scale across York’s schools will be a key milestone in achieving those wider targets. Ensuring that every child is able to eat well, supports their ability to learn and so reduces health inequalities between disadvantaged children and their peers.

This Archbishop’s appeal follows this week’s announcement that donors have funded pilots of free school meals in two York schools. Every child at Burton Green Primary School will be entitled to free breakfasts in early 2024, while free school lunches will be provided to Key Stage 2 children at Westfield Community Primary School from January -December 2024.

Anyone wishing to donate funding to support the Free School meals pilot can do so via the York Community Fund.
