Colin and Sallie Black, have finally realised a long-held ambition of setting up an art school in York this year.
Sallie explained: “We finally resigned from our jobs (after nearly twenty-five years at Leith School of Art for my husband Colin, who’s in his 60s) sold our house in Edinburgh, bought a house in York, but with no premises to work from. Two weeks later we met Rev. Andy Lindley, who already had the idea of using Southlands Methodist Church in Bishopthorpe Road, as some kind of community art hub. So we are delighted to be able to work together to do this.”
The decision to set up shop in York made sense for Sallie, who has direct ancestors going back six generations in Yorkshire.
“My great-grandfather Francis Sellars was the miller at Raindale Mill, now in the grounds of York Castle Museum, when it was on its original site near Pickering. My grandfather George Sellars was born there.”
