Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, Refugee Action York and Age UK York’s Keep Your Pet service received £45,000 boost from The Lord Mayor of York’s fundraising committee last year.
Cllr Barbara Boyce, Lord mayor of York 2017/2018 and now deputy Lord Mayor, can look back in pride after a year of successful fundraising for her chosen charities. The money all raised through hard work and over 50 different events, including quiz nights, sponsored dog walks and even a pig race, although it may have ham-pered by the lack of pigs involved. There were also event evenings supported by the Armed Forces at Fulford Barracks and RAF Linton On Ouse. And of course, not forgetting the annual Lord Mayor’s Ball, which sees the best and brightest of the greater York community come together to create positive change, all whilst dressed to impress.
But all good things must come to an end and were one Lord Mayor leaves, another comes in, the current Lord Mayor Cllr Keith Orrell, who also happens to be the 801st, has taken the torch onwards for charity. Choosing for his mayoral selection, The Island, who give isolated youngsters aged between 8-13 mentoring and a range of opportunities, The York Blind and Partially Sighted Society and The Music Hub, who are the key providers for musical education in York. But with the outgoing Lord Mayor success to be matched or beaten, it can only be positive for York charities.
