Charity Begins at Home

What can start off as a simple good deed, can evolve into a whole new way of life. And an incredible one at that.

If you enjoy getting out and about, have some spare time on your hands, and are keen to make a difference to the lives of people in need – York Blind and Partially Sighted Society (YBPSS) are looking for you.

Their home visiting scheme gives those who struggle with sight loss the opportunity to live an independent life. As well as helping them to get out of the house, a Home Visitor can enable them take part in activities they may not be able to do on their own. And, of course, they can provide crucial companionship.

Catherine Bamford, Volunteer Manager, says: “We have clients who would really like to go out for a coffee or browse local shops. Our volunteers range in age from 18 to 85 and come from all walks of life. They make a huge difference to people’s lives. I’ve had clients say that their volunteer ‘cuts out the loneliness in my life’”.

Don’t worry if you have other commitments – being a Home Visitor is a flexible role and can work around you. If you’re interested in finding out more, call Catherine Bamford on 01904 731122 or email volunteermanager@ybpss.org. Or, you can attend the next YBPSS training session on 11th October at 6pm.
