York Castle Museum is hosting a very special exhibit in honour of the Queen of shoes, Vivienne Westwood, which opens tomorrow (Friday the 13th of July, 2018).
Some of her most iconic and inspiring shoes will be displayed from a personal collection, along with shoes previously shown on the runways in Paris. These will sit along side some of the museums most historic shoes- dating back to 1790’s- which were chosen by Westwood herself over email.
Dame Vivienne Westwood is largely responsible for bringing unique and new genres of fashion into the media and society, more specifically modern punk. Her approach to footwear is said to have mesmerised generations and her success only grows more because of it. She defied the rules of shoe conventions and created a company that cannot be compared to.
From old to current, this collection includes a wide variety of colours, styles, materials and heights for you to sink your feet into. The collection appreciates the work of Vivienne Westwood, and the changes in our history of shoes, which is what inspires Westwood herself when she’s designing her ideas to this day.
They have aimed and achieved to give a great overview of different styles, and convey the idea that inspiration often comes from history, and not just the present. The curators have been working on this exhibition since September 2017.
The exhibit is located in the upper galleries, which are currently inaccessible to wheelchair users. The open hours, every day, is 9.30am-5pm. Adults can get in for £11, an access ticket is £5.50, and children 16 and under get in free with one paying adult. YMT Card Holders are also free.
