Five Kitchen Mistakes Homeowners Regret

By Matt Todd

After more than 30 years in the kitchen and appliance industry, and as part of a family business that’s been serving local homes for nearly 90 years, I’ve seen just about every kitchen mistake imaginable.

Unfortunately, while some choices may seem inconsequential when you’re in the thick of sorting out a new kitchen for your home, making the wrong decisions can be extremely troublesome and costly later down the line, often leading to headaches, unexpected expense, and most of all, difficulty making the most of the space in a practical way.

The good news is, most of these mistakes are easy to avoid with a little planning. Here are the five kitchen regrets we hear most often at Herbert Todd & Son:

1. Not Planning Enough Storage – You can never have too much storage. Deep pan drawers, corner solutions and tall larders can make a huge difference when it comes to maximising storage space. Many homeowners place their focus on aesthetics, worktops and colours, only to discover

later down the line that they’ve nowhere to put the air fryer, mixer and growing collection of water bottles!

2. Poor Lighting Choices – A single ceiling light might have worked in the 1970s, but modern kitchens need layers of lighting. Task lighting under cabinets, soft ambient lighting and feature lighting can completely transform both the look and function of a kitchen.

3. Forgetting About Plug Sockets – I’ve lost count of the number of times someone has shown me a beautiful new kitchen and then admitted they’re using extension leads. Think about where you’ll charge phones, plug in small appliances and power gadgets before installation begins.

4. Choosing Style Over Practicality – A kitchen should look fantastic, but it also has to survive everyday family life. The most successful kitchens combine great design with practical layouts, durable surfaces and easy-to-clean finishes.

5. Buying Appliances as an Afterthought – Appliances are the hardest-working members of any kitchen. By choosing them carefully and well ahead of time, you can help ensure that everything fits perfectly and works together seamlessly.

At Herbert Todd’s, we’ve been helping families create kitchens that stand the test of time for generations. Take it from someone who’s spent a lifetime around kitchens: a little planning today saves a lot of regret tomorrow.
