While many of us may associate entrepreneurial spirit with youth and young bucks, the older business leaders in our region are bucking national trends.
According to a study published by Virtual HQ, which analysed Companies House data for over 474,000 companies incorporated between August 2025 and July 2026, York is home to one of the highest proportions of new business founders aged 60+ in the region. In this period, 6.6% of newly appointed company directors in the city were aged 60+ (a 0.7% increase from the UK average of 5.9%), with York in third place behind only North Yorkshire (10.2%) and the East Riding of Yorkshire (8.2%).
As well as a higher-than-average number of company directors aged 60 or above, the study also found the median age of company founders in our city, 42, to be three years higher than the national median, 39.
