Delve deeper into the Coppergate Dig at The Richard Hill Symposium

Next month, the people of York are invited to a special one-day symposium, which will shed light on the captivating historical artefacts and discoveries unearthed in our city.

The Richard Hill Symposium focuses on the history of the Coppergate Dig (1976-1981), one of the UK’s most significant Viking-age archaeological explorations, and the dig that inspired the creation of JORVIK Viking Centre. Gareth Henry, Director of Public Engagement at York Archaeology, said: “Many people may assume that archaeology ends when trenches and pits are filled in, but really that is just the start of the story. What follows is an extensive programme of research and exploration, piecing together clues in a 1000-year-old jigsaw to help us understand what life was like so many generations ago.”

The day will include inspirational talks from expert speakers including Ailsa Mainman, Andrew Woods, and Lucy Moore. Gareth Henry said: “We’re delighted to be bringing together many of the people who have worked on this project to share their stories and discoveries at the Richard Hall Symposium.”

The Richard Hill Symposium will take place on 18 October from 9.00am to 5.00pm at Tempest Anderson Hall. Visit www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk/events/richard-hall-symposium/ to book your tickets.
