This month, City of York Council’s Executive approved the preparation of a compulsory purchase order, which may help to facilitate the building of the final ten of 36 previously approved affordable homes.
Located at the site of the former Willow House care home on Long Close Lane in the city’s Guildhall ward, which has sat unused since 2017, the 36 new homes, which will be available for social rent and shared ownership, will be designed to be net zero carbon in operation, and will feature new build elements in line with Passivhaus certification.
The compulsory purchase order in question relates to six garages, which sit in the northern section of the development site, and where the final ten approved properties are due to be built. Now that the principle has been agreed, City of York Council will be free to demolish the garages to make way for the full delivery of the housing plans, which were shaped by the input of local residents.
Cllr Dave Merrett, Executive Member for Housing at City of York Council, said: “The 36 new genuinely affordable homes, for social rent and shared ownership, will be set in an attractive position offering sustainable living in a vibrant city centre location”.
