England may have been synonymous with warm, flat beer in days gone by, but the fact is that fizz (most often facilitated by CO2) is an essential asset for any brewery. But, amidst rocketing CO2 costs, one giant of the local brewing scene has found a sustainable new way to keep its pints fresh and fizzy, with the help of City of York Council and York & North Yorkshire Growth Hub’s Business Sustainability Programme.
Lee Grabham, Co-Founder and Production Director at Brew York, first opened in 2016, said: “About three years ago, we saw the price of CO2 spike 3,000%. At that kind of level, it makes our business completely unviable. We then had to kind of break that dependency on CO2.” By harnessing new nitrogen generation technology, Brew York was able to substitute some of its CO2 usage, whilst cutting costs and boosting the sustainability of the business in the process. In total, the brewery is expected to reduce around 900 tonnes of CO2 emissions within the next decade, and save an estimated £500,000 in CO2 spending. Lee said: “Putting in place a grant that was able to fund 60% of the project made it a bit of a no-brainer for us.”
