As any Yorkie will tell you, our city is more than accustomed to flooding, and the River Ouse plays an integral part in York’s identity. Local families and visitors are now invited to embark on a wondrous discovery of the city via its waterways, with the York rivers trail: the rivers and us, a new walking and wheeling trail that combines art, storytelling and digital experiences to help people understand how York lives with water.
Councillor Jenny Kent, Executive Member for Environment and Climate Emergency at City of York Council, said: “York’s rivers have always shaped our city, and the York rivers trail helps bring that relationship to life in new and engaging ways. The trail is about helping people connect more deeply with the river and understand the part we can all play in building a more climate-ready city. It is a thoughtful and creative way to explore York.”
Visitors can explore the trail through some of the most beautiful riverside parks, gardens and historic spaces in the city, including Homestead Park, Leeman Park, Museum Gardens, North Street Gardens, Tower Gardens and Rowntree Park. Curious kids can also take a closer look at the river and its surrounding landscape via special exhibitions, sculptural viewing frames, and an interactive mobile experience powered by Hello Lamp Post, Talk to the River.
We’ll see you by the riverside!
