A long-serving volunteer member of York Hospital Radio, a registered charity and radio station which broadcasts around the clock, seven days a week, recently celebrated his 50th anniversary with the organisation.
Philip Bewers, from Acomb, has presented thousands of shows at the station since joining in 1976, and was instrumental in helping it obtain its licence to broadcast on DAB radio. As a lifelong football fan, he looks back with particular pride on commentating on York City at Wembley on two occasions. Speaking on his five-decade stint with the station, he said: “Fifty years with York Hospital Radio has been a real privilege, giving me countless memories, including many years in sports broadcasting. It’s about connection, community and making someone’s day a little brighter. I’m proud to have been a part of that for half a century.”
Over the years, Philip has worked as a Public Relations Officer, Treasurer, Chairman, and Secretary, and is currently a trustee. York Hospital Radio Chair Ian Clennan added: “Congratulations to Philip on 50 amazing years! We can’t imagine the station without him – he has played an absolutely vital role in keeping us afloat financially over many years, and his contribution to running the organisation, and to broadcasting for us, has been immense.”
