The recent news of famed artist David Hockney’s passing has been met with sadness in his native Yorkshire, with shockwaves resonating amongst artists and creatives across the county and beyond.
The Bradford-born artist, one of the most recognisable pop art pioneers, is best known for vibrant, colour-laden works including A Bigger Splash, the refined portraiture of My Parents and Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy, and various, vibrantly realised depictions of local Yorkshire landscapes, including Garrowby Hill and The Road to York Through Sledmere.
Hockney’s enduring legacy is evident in the work of countless international artists, from the famed YBA disruptor Dame Tracey Emin and Nigerian-American artist Dawn Okoro, to the Spanish post-pop art explorer Coco Dávez, and British sculptor Schoony. In the wake of his death, we’ve seen an outpouring of tributes from figures ranging from Grayson Perry and Tate Britain Director Alex Farquharson to Sir Kier Starmer and King Charles.
