Royal Wedding fever has hit York city centre, with the return of Brollywalk to the Coppergate Centre – with a special patriotic twist ahead of the big event this weekend (Saturday 19 May 2018), when the wedding will be shown on a screen for visitors.
36 Union flag umbrellas have been suspended down Coppergate Walk to mark Saturday’s wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle, which will be shown on a screen in Coppergate’s copper-coloured kiosk.
“We did consider bunting, but wanted to have a little more fun and create something a little more eye-catching for visitors,” comments Coppergate’s centre manager, Pippa Unwin. “The umbrellas were hugely popular last autumn, so we decided to bring them back with a bit of a twist – and even whilst we were putting them up on Monday evening, many people were stopping to take photos and selfies!”
Coppergate will be streaming the live BBC broadcast of the Royal Wedding in Coppergate, with coverage from 10.00am to 2.00pm. “This will be a fantastically civilised affair, as you’d expect from the Royal Wedding – with no bars or pubs within the centre, it is always family-friendly and a great place to shop, any day of the week!” adds Pippa.
The brollies will remain in place until next week.
