REVIEW: Come From Away @ York Grand Opera House

By Jack Rooke

First hitting stages in 2015, Come From Away is an award-winning musical that’s already completed successful Broadway and West End runs, and has been staged across North America, Australia, the UK and Ireland. My partner and I were lucky enough to catch the show’s opening night at York Grand Opera House, and honestly, it blew us away!

This York Stage company production of Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s musical is based on true events, and follows the story of around 7,000 passengers whose planes were unexpectedly grounded in Gander, Newfoundland, in the wake of the September 11 attacks. From the moment the curtains first opened, we found this acclaimed show to be simply captivating – the energy from the cast was intense the whole way through, and we could really see how much work the crew had put into the show.

The music and the cast worked perfectly together, and we found that this show is breezy and easy to watch, whilst still packing a punch and sticking with you long after the final curtain. There are plenty of goosebump-inducing moments, and others that just make you smile – Come From Away is a wholesome, feel-good show, in which the emotional moments are balanced out with injections of light humour.

The staging is quite simple, but it works! We found that the whirlwind pace did not let up throughout the show, and were really engaged, the whole time! The cast and musicians got a full standing ovation on the night of our visit, which speaks for itself.

In my opinion, Come From Away is a 5-star show. If we could give it more stars, we would! I couldn’t recommend the show more. This is not one to miss – get your tickets, while you still can!

Come From Away runs at York Grand Opera House until Saturday, 18 April. Visit www.atgtickets.com/shows/come-from-away/grand-opera-house-york to book your tickets.
