Making Waves: The Art of Japanese Woodblock Print is a major exhibition exploring more than 300 years of Japanese printmaking, charting the evolution of this influential art form from the 17th century to the present day.
Through over 100 striking works, the exhibition reveals how Japanese woodblock prints were shaped by nature, society and cultural change. Visitors can discover the techniques behind the prints while exploring themes of landscape, daily life, beauty and imagination.
The exhibition features iconic works by masters such as Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige and Kitagawa Utamaro, including Hokusai’s world-famous The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Highlights from York Art Gallery’s own collection - some shown publicly for the first time - are displayed alongside exceptional loans from institutions including the British Museum, British Library, Durham Oriental Museum and Maidstone Museum.
Bringing together prints, illustrated books, armour and costume, Making Waves offers a vivid and immersive insight into the colourful world of Japanese woodblock art - a visually rich exhibition not to be missed.
