Not a Pot is a major new redisplay at the Centre of Ceramic Art, showcasing the breadth and ambition of sculptural pottery from York Art Gallery’s internationally significant collection.
The exhibition marks the passing of influential British potter Gordon Baldwin (1932–2025), celebrating his pivotal role in shifting ceramics away from functional objects towards expressive, sculptural forms. Using Baldwin’s ideas as a starting point, the displays explore themes including Surrealism, landscape, the human figure and the tension between function and form.
Alongside Baldwin’s work, the exhibition highlights his lasting influence as both an artist and a teacher, featuring pieces by leading ceramicists including Ewen Henderson, Gillian Lowndes, Richard Slee, Bernard Leach, Ruth King and Ben Arnup.
A thoughtful and visually striking exhibition that reconsiders what pottery can be - and what it can say.
