REVIEW: Slava’s Snow Show at Grand Opera House York

By Mim Williams

What better way to spend a cold, snowy winter’s evening than watching the world-famous Slava’s Snow Show at the Grand Opera House?

Slava Polunin’s famed show, which first charmed audiences in Moscow decades ago, has evolved into a global theatrical phenomenon, although nothing can truly prepare you for the experience in the flesh. The show starts as a classic clown performance, before revealing itself as an immersive, multi-sensory spectacle. It isn’t just a show you watch; it’s one you feel, absorb, and will carry with you long after the final snowflake falls!

Polunin’s signature clowns, each with oversized red noses, floppy shoes, and exaggerated hats, are very mischievous and really engage the audience with their naughty, cheeky behaviour. These clowns are not just performers, but playful rule-breakers, constantly toying with the expectations of the spectators. They wander into the stalls, hover over rows of seats, and chat with us at random. Listening to the rolling waves of laughter, seeing children and adults alike staring wide-eyed at the stage, you find yourself caught up in the collective energy. For those attending, the stalls are undoubtedly the place to be. You never quite know what might be headed your way next, and that thrill is part of the show’s enduring magic. I have never been to a show where you get as much audience interaction!

With the festive season approaching, Slava’s Snowshow offers the perfect escape for those wishing for a cheeky and unusual way to get into the Christmas spirit. This isn’t just a performance for children (though they will surely be spellbound), but a celebration of the inner child in us all!

Slava’s Snow Show runs at York Grand Opera House from 19-23 November. Visit www.atgtickets.com/shows/slavas-snow-show/grand-opera-house-york to book your tickets today.
