Experience York Minster in a whole new light this autumn as the iconic cathedral is transformed by PHOENIX, a spectacular new sound and light projection marking the 40th anniversary of the devastating 1984 fire.
On 9 July 1984, flames tore through the Minster’s South Transept, destroying the roof. But from the ashes rose an extraordinary story of bravery, resilience and restoration — one that continues to this day.
Created using state-of-the-art projection mapping technology, PHOENIX brings that story to life across the magnificent façade of the Minster, blending history, art and light in a breathtaking celebration of York’s creativity. The event also helps raise vital funds for the cathedral’s ongoing conservation, ensuring this 13th-century masterpiece continues to inspire for generations to come.
