This year one of the questions we have frequently been asked is where to consider for a milder summer break— where the temperature is likely to be closer to the comfortable mid–late 20s and less scorching hot. This month we are sharing the four best places to consider.

Madeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the northwest coast of Africa (around a four-hour flight from the UK). Thanks to that Atlantic breeze, summer temperatures average a maximum of 25 degrees. Evenings are a little cooler so we would recommend packing a light jacket just in case. It’s a great destination for scuba diving, surfing, and whale watching—take a toboggan ride in a wicker basket through the streets of Funchal or, if you are a football fan, head over to the CR7 (Cristiano Ronaldo) museum. Over recent years, Madeira has adapted to appeal to a wider range of guests, from families to solo travellers, and couples, and is even suited to multigenerational trips.

Scandinavia offers a short flight (Manchester to Oslo, Norway can be done in just 1hr and 40 minutes) and July temperatures average out at a high of 23 degrees! The region has everything on offer, from iconic Nordic capitals and picturesque villages, to dramatic coastlines. Choose to cruise the Norwegian Fjords, take a family trip to Legoland in Denmark, opt for a multi-centre tour by train, or choose to self-drive.

The Canary Islands are not only a great close-to-home option for winter sun, but its summer temperatures —with average highs of 28 degrees— make it more comfortable than most eastern Mediterranean destinations. The Canary Island of Lanzarote has it all. With beach resorts like Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, and Puerto Del Carmen, there’s something for families of all ages. If you do fancy a break from the main tourist areas hire a car and visit the Timanfaya National Park where you can feel the heat coming from the rock of the dormant volcano, alternatively, you can go wine tasting in La Geria, or visit the town of Teguise, once the capital of Lanzarote.

Thinking of somewhere a little further afield? The Indian Ocean Island of Mauritius will offer July average high temperatures of 24/25 degrees. It’s accessible via a direct 12-hour flight from London. A range of hotels are on offer, from luxury all-inclusives to golf resorts and even bubble lodges at a tea plantation! The destination also offers wildlife experiences, amazing beaches as well as hiking opportunities in the Black River Gauge, snorkelling, and scuba diving.
