York City F.C: March 2024

Featuring relegation six-pointers and a dispute between the York City Supporters Trust and Cleveland Police, here’s all your latest on the Minstermen.

At the time of publication, York City F.C. sit comfortably in 18th place in the National League, two points away from the relegation zone, a gap that could stretch to eight if the Minstermen win their two games in hand.

In the last month City managed to remain unbeaten against fellow relegation-threatened sides — after a win over Oxford and a draw against Maidenhead.

Caught in the middle of those results however, was a frustrating away loss at the hands of Hartlepool United. The already disappointing result was further marred by crowd trouble after the final whistle— leading to a dispute between local police and the York City Supporters Trust (YCST).

This came about after Cleveland Police — the force responsible for the policing of Hartlepool— released a statement that alleged “significant violent disorder” took place between a group of York City and Hartlepool supporters as the away fans made their way back to the train station.

They said that “a large crowd of York City supporters appeared to have charged towards Hartlepool United fans in the town”. As a result, when faced with what they called “confrontational and aggressive behaviour” officers made eight arrests.

The YCST have suggested that the police report “does not entirely align with the experiences of many fans and our members.”

In a statement of their own, the Trust called for an independent review. Outlining that, “While we respect the efforts of the police, we urge a comprehensive and fair examination of all sides of the events to ensure an accurate representation of the situation.”

“YCST would like to see a broad review of all plans and subsequent events that engages both football clubs and supporter organisations. This review should include evidence collected from a range of sources including personal statements and social media.”

York City face 17th-place Southend and 19th-place Dorking — the two teams closest to them in the table — across the next two fixtures. Six points from those games might finally carry the club away from relegation, but anything less could see the Minstermen sink closer to the danger zone.
