Got a few spare hours? Why not lend a hand to help uncover York’s lost history

With the right amount of help, York Archaeology Community believe that 2024 will be the year that they finally track down the location of a missing 13th century church.

St Peter-in-the-Willows is believed to have stood at a site near the former Willow Green care home — just inside Walmgate Bar—  for 300 years, until its demolition in 1549. However, there is no record of its exact location. It is expected that uncovering the full layout of the churchyard, and the location of medieval buildings and yards around it, could reveal countless untold details about York’s medieval history.

York Archaeology Community Engagement Officer Arran Johnson has asked for locals to join in community archaeology sessions. He says, “We have more opportunities for local people to get involved – whether through research, the washing of finds, or even helping us dig a series of small trenches to see what we can find.”

If the scheme receives a positive response from residents, it will take place over the spring and summer, before the trenches are filled and turf is re-laid in the autumn.

Updates on the project will be posted on the York Archaeology website, where enthusiasts can join a mailing list to be kept up to date on the latest discoveries. For more details, please contact takepart@yorkat.co.uk.
