York City FC have announced the appointment of Neal Ardley as the club’s new first team manager. He has signed a three year deal.
Fans of the club should be encouraged that the tumultuous start to the season may finally be over. Ardley arrives with vast experience after a successful playing career in the EFL and a number of successful managerial stints in League Two. He most notably oversaw 300 games as Wimbledon manager across six years from 2012 to 2018.
He also arrives with experience battling in the National League. In 2020 he led Notts County to the National League Playoff Final, picking up a number of prestigious personal accolades en route. These included the Manager of the Month award in December 2019, January 2021 and October 2021.
Since 2021, he has continued to demonstrate his competence as Solihull Moors Head Coach. Last term Solihull Moors completed their second-highest finish in the club’s history as they finished third, falling just short in the play-off final to then former League Two side Grimsby Town.
The length of the contract, stretching over three years, should be the biggest sign of encouragement for fans. It indicates serious ambitious intent from both the new ownership and Ardley, a manager with a track record of bringing his sides to playoffs inheriting an exciting squad of players.
