26 years of York Food Festival

York’s annual festival of flavour is back for 2023, marking 26 years since it first opened back in 1997. It runs across ten days from the 22nd of September until the 1st of October where you can indulge in your favourite York brands from over 100 local vendors, or experiment with something new like Malton Brewery’s Yorkshire pudding beer (made with real Yorkshire puddings!). There will be live music, a city-wide cookie tour and daily food demonstrations at Sampson Square from noon until 4pm.

Festival Director Michael Hjort sums up the festival’s spirit: “We want to run an event that celebrates local talent and is run by and for the York community. The world is full of Food Festivals these days; what’s different about York is that it’s not a couple of guys off TV and a market brought in from anywhere.”

What makes the York Food Festival stand out from the crowd, other than the incredible 400,000 people expected to attend over the ten days, is that the cooking demonstrations taking place on St Sampson’s Square couldn’t be any more open. Anyone with a genuine interest in cooking can sign up to demonstrate for free.

Having run these festivals throughout the last quarter-century the organisers have arrived at a perfect balance, combining York’s infamous history as the chocolate city and it’s legacy as an ancient market town with a continuous focus on exciting foodie trends within the community of today. From fringe venues to food factories — the food festival of 2023 is the place to be.
