Inspired by the powerful call for “climate action on all fronts” from the UN Secretary General, York Environment Week — the city-wide sustainability festival, is returning for September 2023 with an ambitious new purpose. A packed schedule of diverse events will be taking place throughout York with the aim of encouraging green progress everywhere all at once. At the head of that roster is a climate-focused People’s Assembly, hosted by Extinction Rebellion (XR) York.
Extinction Rebellion are a UK-based global movement who’s most recent protest saw more than 60,000 people take to the streets of London. Since starting operations in 2018, they have led and driven forward the conversation on climate action. This September they plan to bring that expertise to York.
The People’s Assembly will be held at the Central Methodist Church on the 30th September from 13:00 until 17:30. In keeping with York’s rich history of bringing local citizens together to make decisions on the issues that matter most, residents will be invited to use their voice to take part in a discussion over a range of environmental priorities, including ending reliance on fossil fuels and protecting biodiversity. The discussion will culminate in a list of actions that will be presented to the council, with the hope of transforming the progress made during the week into lasting and meaningful change.
