This September is set to be a special month for train enthusiasts. North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their passenger service in style, turning their annual steam gala into an extravaganza. This celebration of half a century in steam will feature the very best of NYMR’s fleet of engines alongside some exciting guest locos.
The event will run over four action packed days from Thursday the 21st of September until Sunday the 24th, with timetables starting at 9am and running every 30 minutes until as late as 10pm on the Sunday. Guests will get the chance to see the very best of our home county along 18 miles of scenery that pass through the wooded valleys and beautiful countryside of the North York Moors National Park. There will also be a unique opportunity to travel along steam services from Pickering to Whitby. It’s expected to be an experience like no other and makes for a chance to see the beautiful scenery of our home as NYMR’s first passengers did on steam trains 50 years ago.
Chris Price, Chief Executive Officer at NYMR, said: “The annual Steam Gala is one of the most exciting events of the year. This year is an extra special one as it’s our 50th anniversary, and we have the pleasure of welcoming four visiting locomotives – including iconic locomotive Sir Nigel Gresley. With so much to see over the four days, it’s not a surprise that tickets are always so high in demand.’’
The LNER ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ engine will also be accompanied by the Grand Central Railway Trust’s legendary BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 No. 92214. Excitingly this year the train has been repainted back into British Railway’s renowned black livery. The exhilarating fun doesn’t end with this reveal either — there are still two further visiting locomotives to be announced.
Alongside the guest locos, the NYMR will be displaying the very best of their fleet. The BR 9F No. 92134 ,SR Railway Schools Class No.926 ‘Repton’, Lucie No. 8, BR Standard 4 Tank No. 80136, Peggy No. 29 and many more will be on show.
Day tickets for the celebration are available now, priced at £45 for one day, with discounted options for multi-day tickets. As well as this, Kids Go Free (aged 0-15) and members get 50% off tickets.
