By Ben Robinson.
I’ve really been getting into reading memoirs. There is something quite magical and enticing about reading someone’s story, they can take you from the grunge, underground culture of noughties NYC, to the English countryside and how it inspired them. Whatever you like to read, there is always something for you. I thought this month I’d share with you some of my favourite memoirs I have read in recent months.
‘Chaos Theory’ by Leah McSweeney
This book was a showstopper for me. McSweeney, a pioneer in women’s streetwear, details the difficulties of her childhood. From what it was like growing up in New York City, to working with some of the biggest names in fashion. This book will take you on her journey of resilience and grit, teaching you many inspiring lessons along the way.
‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’ by Jeanette McCurdy
McCurdy’s debut book released rave reviews, and I agree with all of them. In her memoir, McCurdy details her career as a child actress, followed by her troubled relationship with her mum, who passed away in 2013. The book splits into before and after sections which captures her emotions perfectly. This book is a must-read!
‘This Is Going to Hurt’ by Adam Kay
If you want something to tug on those heartstrings, then this is the book for you. This is a collection of Kay’s diary entries from his medical training between 2004 to 2010. Full of tales that will have you feeling all kinds of emotions, this book is one to keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire read.
