We hear from our resident sports writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson.
It seems that no week is ever a quiet one in the land of York City. Sometimes you do wonder what it would be like to support a normal club (if there is such a thing), and if there is anything else to go by, it’s that no doubt when this column goes live something else will drastically happen as it has done in these last couple of months.
There are a lot of questions to be asked of the management team who took over before Christmas and yet, although the record isn’t bad, it’s been the way we’ve played that has left us all feeling a little unconvinced that this is going to work out. Of course, I am still happy to be converted but there does need some work in all areas.
This team seems to become incohesive overnight with the ability to pass the ball in short supply. In other aspects though, what Webb has shown is that he has contacts in the game, adding exciting young loan players. Shaqi Forde has been a revelation since he joined. He became the youngest player to score a hattrick at 18 years old for the club in what is their centenary year. Whatever happens after this season, it feels like we have uncovered a real gem who will find his way to the top and is a real talent. When results may not go our way, Webb will work his magic in his recruitment which he is so well known for.
The two-year deals for the likes of Mitch Hancox and Dan Pybus have been great for the morale around the club. But the fact that the supporters’ trust has said that chairman, Glen Henderson will legally have to leave the club, leaves me asking one question: what is going on? These are not the actions of a chairman who is just going to step aside, and legally binding or not, it does feel as though this will be a long drawn-out process that could turn nasty over the coming weeks. If this is a way of getting fans to come around, I think he’s got a long way to go. One thing I do hope is that whatever happens, it is kept out of playing matters. We’ve seen what this sort of interference can do and it’s never good. Let’s hope it’s the good news fans want.
