New York Against Cancer support centre opening this autumn

New York Against Cancer Support Centre

In a matter of months, York Against Cancer’s brand-new support centre is due to open. Situated at the York Community Stadium in Huntington, the Leveson Centre will offer a wide range of holistic support services to complement clinical cancer treatments provided at York Hospital and help patients from across North and East Yorkshire navigate their way through their cancer diagnosis and recovery.

The Leveson Centre has thoughtfully been named after one of the charity’s founders, Professor Steve Leveson, a retired Consultant Surgeon, who, with two colleagues started York Against Cancer 35 years ago. Together with his wife, Pat, Leveson has supported the charity ever since.  Renowned for his genuine compassion and skills as a surgeon, researcher and educator, Leveson has touched the lives of thousands of people across North and East Yorkshire.

The new space will provide a friendly, welcoming environment for patients, friends and families to receive support or just to drop in for a cup of coffee and a chat. Visitors will be able to access information, advice and professional help as well as access a weekly and monthly timetable of activities. Services include benefits and financial advice, ‘Look Good, Feel Better’ workshops, complementary therapy, psychological support and counselling, will writing, and wellbeing activities.

Exclusively funded through generous donations and legacies received by York Against Cancer, the charity is working closely in partnership with the York and Scarborough Hospital Trust to ensure they create a space that will positively impact the region’s level of cancer support services for years to come.

To support the ongoing costs of the Centre as well as their other services, York Against Cancer are running a fundraising campaign alongside the launch of the new Leveson Centre.

These services include the Mobile Chemotherapy Unit, launched in 2017; the minibus service which takes patients from York and the surrounding areas for treatment at St James’ Hospital in Leeds; a respite home in Filey; as well as a world-leading cancer research programme at the University of York.

Further updates on the Leveson Centre services, volunteering opportunities, and job vacancies will be announced over the next few months as the development progresses.
