No amount of breezy weather could stop the people of Yorkshire from heading down to Castle Howard to watch The Chemical Brothers on Sunday night – another big concert of the summer after the stately home hosted 80s chart-toppers, Duran Duran.
Set across vast, beautiful countryside grounds, the UK-based Grammy-winning electronic music duo, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, wowed North Yorkshire’s crowd right from the start of their impressive set with the techno banger, ‘Block Rockin’ Beats’ to the very end of the night with legendary chart-topper, ’Galvanise’.
Following a Covid case within the band, it was unclear as to whether The Chemical Brothers would perform at this venue given the news of gig cancellations in Ireland and Glastonbury a couple of days prior. Rowlands’ illness did, however, get better in time for him to perform on Sunday night, much to the relief of his fans.
Looking around, there were smiles aplenty and lots of two-step action from the crowd as DJ, James Holroyd opened the set, setting the tone for the main event. Popular tunes across the decades were later performed by the electronic duo, including ‘Free Yourself’, ‘Swoon’ and ‘Eve of Destruction’. The array of bucket hats, holographic clothes and glittered faces amongst the crowd were a sight to behold and it was fantastic to see concert-goers seemingly living their best lives.
Colourful concert attire wasn’t the only spectacle of the evening, however, and it must be said that the visuals of the duo’s set were phenomenal. From colourful lazors, giant robots and crowd-surfing balloons, the visual effects were incredibly well thought out, providing the crowd with quite the spectacle. It has to be said, a particular highlight of the evening was hearing the resounding beats of ‘Got to Keep On’, whilst the audience danced and chanted their hearts out, under the rays of an enormous disco ball.
A fantastic night for all, The Chemical Brothers certainly galvanised their fans last Sunday night and we can only hope that this class duo will make a return to Yorkshire in the not-too-distant future.
