Back with a burst of steam and 17,000 dazzling lights, this year’s North Yorkshire Moors Railway Light Spectacular is a stunning sensory experience, writes Zoe Cartwright.
We’ve hopped in the car, driven up the unpredictable A64 and now, the whole family is all geared up for the Light Spectacular at NYMR.
My excited four-year-old is greeted by a friendly NYMR volunteer with a flashing wristband ‘and here’s one for mum and dad too,’ he says. The wristbands, it turns out, flash in time to the music on board the spectacular steam train stationed at Pickering.
Steam trains always seem to have an impressive stature, but this sight is something else, over ten carriages are adorned in thousands of twinkling coloured lights. Even the engine itself is impressively lit.
All aboard! As families pile in, the train is buzzing with excitement. The ‘Voice Over Guy’ from The X Factor keeps the crowd entertained with jokes, games and even encourages a good ol’ dance in your seats to the DJ-mix up that’s playing some of the greatest hits starting from the 60s to present day.
The lights are fantastic and not just on the train either. Looking out of the window, beams of light are projected onto the surrounding Moors, making the trees dance and spectators watch in awe.
You can tell there’s been some hard work put into the experience.
“This is an experience you’re not going to want to miss out on! The team has been working really hard behind the scenes collaborating with an immersive sensory company to create a unique journey for passengers.”
Chris Price, NYMR General Manager
