100 years of Tang Hall

Tang Hall is celebrating its centenary this year, and to commemorate the occasion, Tang Hall Local History Group have released a series of postcards.

After the First World War, York was becoming crowded, and a solution was needed. 
Land was purchased by the council from the church commissioners to build a new estate to the East of York, and later, the sale of the Starkey estate allowed the council to buy the land between Tang Hall Lane and Melrosegate. 
The building of Tang Hall started in 1920 with part of Fifth Avenue and Carter Avenue.  
By 1926, the slums of Walmgate were in the process of being demolished, and nearly 1000 homes had been built. People rushed to rent the new houses being provided by the council.

Can you help? 
The first people to move into the new estate were Charles Harrison and his wife, Jean. They moved into the property in Carter Avenue in April 1921. Carter Avenue is named after Alderman Carter, a butcher of the Shambles and Lord Mayor of York during 1910 and 11. Tang Hall Local History Group would love to trace the descendants of Charles and Jean, so if you can help them, please get in touch!
