Your Local Link has many little helpers who are always happy to go and review any new fun activities that might be on offer. One of the latest additions in York is Skelf Island at Castle Howard.

Castle Howard is an impressive day out in its own right, but you can imagine my little one’s excitement when I told him that there was indeed a magical home to a different kind of creature hidden in the grounds, and we were headed there for the day!
Skelf Island, set in the picturesque lake at Castle Howard, is home to the Skelves, who cause mischief and mayhem, interact with the birds, and protect local wildlife.
We took the scenic route to Skelf Island by going on the woodland walk, which takes around 30 minutes with a toddler going at their own pace, and is totally worth the suspense.
The series of treetop nest structures where the Skelves reside are connected by rope bridges, slides, nets and climbing equipment. The whole play area complements the environment without being intrusive or garish and there’s a lovely natural vibe about the place.
My little one had clear favourites from the play area. He’s a climber and naturally the climbing walls took centre-stage, but the best and biggest surprise of all for him was the free tractor ride back up to the house after play time. Little kids and tractors, eh?
A personal favourite of mine was the rope bridge that takes you across the lake to Skelf Island, (which is a bit of a rare treat for grown-ups to get to go on), but I’m happy to report that the island is fully accessible, and there is an alternative bridge for push chairs and wheelchairs.
The Boathouse Café (which is only open on weekends) offers a wide range of snacks, meals and treats to refuel after a busy play session. And while doing so, you can watch the swans on the lake from a safe distance!
All of this is included in the standard entry price for the grounds of Castle Howard, making it a great value day out with plenty to do for families. And if you don’t stop by the Boathouse for lunch, I’d recommend popping into the cafe in the courtyard on the way out: there are some amazing cakes on offer.
