This Year’s Theatre Royal Dame Will Be…

…no-one.

After 40 years of Berwick Kaler playing the famous pantomime Dame at York Theatre Royal, there is much speculation of who will fill the shoes of the fan favourite role this year. What if we were to tell you that there is no Dame…?

That’s right, Sleeping Beauty, written by Berwick Kaler, will feature no pantomime Dame character. York Theatre Royal has announced that loved-by-many, Martin Barrass, will be playing the royal role of the Queen! What does Martin have to say about this?

“Dear Diary, stayed in, reigned all day”.

So, despite not playing the role of the Dame, Martin will be wearing a fabulous dress and is sure to still be absolutely hilarious. Let’s hope he doesn’t miss his Mam too much.

Martin Barrass as the Queen

The pantomime has always brought the fun of the theatre to people of all ages every Christmas here in York, and it will return again this year to delight audiences over the festive period.

Berwick’s tale of the classic Sleeping Beauty will be performed at York Theatre Royal from the 7th of December until the 25th of January. Martin will join other members of the York pantomime family such as baddie David Leonard, Suzy Cooper and ‘lurverly’ A.J Powell.

Tickets for this year’s pantomime are available to purchase from the Box Office on 01904 623568 and online by clicking here.
