York, as anyone who visits this website will know, is home to some of the finest attractions, the most lovely walks and some of the most interesting history of virtually anywhere in the country. It’s where beautiful architecture sits side by side with cutting-edge boutiques and where some of England’s most remarkable discoveries can be found.

There’s just one problem; it’s in England, and that means rain, rain, rain.

Of course, York wouldn’t be York if it were bathed in perpetual sunshine, but it does mean that from time to time, exploring York’s outside spaces isn’t a viable option. So, what do you do when the weather takes a turn for the worse? Well, we have a few ideas. Ideas like…

Spend a Day Exploring York’s Museums

York is lucky enough to play host to some truly brilliant museums, many of which are found in the heart of the city.

Attractions like the York Castle Museum, the JORVIK Viking Centre, York’s Chocolate Story and the Yorkshire Museum are located close enough together to make getting between them as easy to popping up an umbrella and making the short walk. Best of all? They’re all included in the York Pass, which also offers included admission to York Mansion House, the Richard III Experience Goddard’s House and Gardens and even City Cruises, should the weather pick up!

Go Gaming in York’s Only Gaming Café

What unites Paris, Milan and York? Could it be the high fashion on show? The beautiful, historic architecture? Well, yes and yes, but crucially for those of us who can’t get by without a caffeine fix – it’s the incredible coffee houses around virtually every corner.

However, when it comes to truly unique cafés, there’s none quite like Random Encounter. Found in the heart of York, just around the bend from York Art Gallery, Random Encounter blends great snacks and beautiful coffee with over 1,200 video games, hundreds of board games and ultra-fast WiFi. opening up a world of casino games like the Paddy Power Deal or no Deal game, online poker or live roulette too.

Consoles ranging from the Commodore 64 to the PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch are on tap and multiplayer titles are a key focus, so there’s always something for you and your companions to enjoy. It’s a glorious way to pass a few rainy hours without leaving the heart of York’s city centre.

Take in a Little Culture

No trip to York is complete without taking in a show. With both The Grand Opera House and York Theatre Royal within the heart of the city, there’s no better way to enjoy a little culture.

West-end shows regularly make their way to York’s theatres, as do some of the leading stand-up comedians that the country has to offer. You’ll also find that York’s theatres play host to smaller productions from some of the best up-and-coming and established playwrights in the world.

Not a theatre fan? York has several brilliant cinemas, too. City Screen Picturehouse is our local arthouse cinema, offering an intimate, charming cinematic experience with titles you will know and titles you’ll want to know. For blockbusters, there’s Everyman York, which offers a cinematic experience like no other – complete with sofas and food delivered right to your seat.
