Staying safe online with PCSO Keith Hall

Phone, email and internet – these are the tools we use every day, but they are also the tools that fraudsters and scammers use to try to part people with their money.  In fact, Action Fraud now receives more than 250 reports of attempted frauds and scams every month – and that’s from North Yorkshire alone.

PCSO Keith Hall

PCSO Keith Hall from North Yorkshire Police is one of the Force’s anti-fraud ambassadors. He says:

“Nearly 40% of reported scams are initiated over the phone by people claiming to be from an official organisation, so be on your guard.  If someone calls you saying your bank account or computer is under threat, don’t assume it is genuine.  Put the phone down and call the company from another phone.  Scammers can keep the original line open so when you think you are calling the bank, in reality you are speaking to the scammers.  It’s also worth considering installing a call blocking device to stop cold-calling.”

Says Keith, “Most people think they wouldn’t fall for a fraud, but criminals are sophisticated.  Take care never to share your security details, or allow a stranger access to your computer.  Listen to your instincts, and don’t allow yourself to feel pressured into doing anything you’re unsure about.”

Falling victim to a fraud or a scam can cost you dearly –  but there are simple ways to protect yourself:

Never share security details or give a stranger access to your computer.

Be mindful who you trust. Even if someone says they are from an “official” organisation, don’t assume they are genuine.

Don’t be rushed or pressured into making an “on the spot” decision.

Listen to your instincts – if something “feels” wrong, it often is!

Stay in control – have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information. Stop the discussion if you don’t feel in control of it.
