Next Chapter For Haxby And Wigginton’s New Library

“Libraries are a vital part of our communities and provide an opportunity for lifelong development and learning. I’m pleased that plans for a new library for the local community in Haxby can now move forward.”

Cllr Keith Myers, Executive Member for education, children and Young people, City of York Council

The first draft for the future of Haxby and Wigginton’s new library moves closer to the presses, as an agreement has been made for the preferred venue; Haxby and Wigginton Scout headquarters. The terms were finalised on November 12th with Haxby Town Council for a long-term lease of the premises. Plans are currently in development for the building’s regeneration and investment.

But don’t worry, no scouts were injured in the process and will in fact benefit from a newly refurbished space, which will also be available to all existing community groups. The refurbishment will include a high quality library facility for local residents, will replace the previous library which was closed in 2016 and the building subsequently demolished because of  public safety concern. Due to the early stages of development, local residents are being asked to get involved with proposed plans during a four week public consultation period starting from November 19th until December 14th at Haxby and Wigginton mobile library and New Earswick library.

So whether you love a good thriller, relish a period classic or simply can’t put down the latest Jilly Cooper romp, reading offers you a chance to see a hundred lives from a hundred different perspectives. The creation of a new library will help a whole new generation fall in love with the written word and maybe remind a few from the previous ones what they have been missing.
