Ey up! Have a gander at these 7 Yorkshire Day events for a reight good time, pet.
Not wanting you to miss out on our county’s proudest day, we’ve compiled a list of must-see events for you to catch. From competitions to city centre film showings, it’s sure to be a day rich in food, fun and history.
1. Yorkshire on film
St Sampson’s Square | 10am – 7pm.
It will be hard to miss the giant screen in St. Sampson’s Square courtesy of York BID, which will show fascinating archive footage of the city over the years in a special selection of short films from the team at the Yorkshire Film Archive.
The archive footage will be broken up by Yorkshire classic film, Chicken Run, for all the family to enjoy.
The big screen showing of archive footage will take place on Thursday 1st August 2019 from 10am-1pm and then again from 2:30-7pm, with the Chicken Run viewing in between from 1-2:30pm.
2. York Maze’s annual Yorkshire Pudding Toss
York Maze, Elvington | 1.30pm
Amongst the more interactive events, York Maze’s annual Yorkshire Day celebrations will see ‘Yorkshire Puddings fly’ in the Yorkshire pudding tossing competition as well as events such as the Straw Bale Race where giant round straw bales are rolled in a 50 meter track and the Parkin Parking competition where the aim is to throw a piece of Yorkshire Parkin into a grid space to win a prize. The activities at York Maze promise to entertain and give everyone a chance to get involved with the fun, even the staff will be wearing their flat caps and are encouraging their visitors to do the same to embrace their Yorkshire-ness.
Activities will be taking place throughout the day on Thursday 1st August and “with an ey up and away” the Yorkshire pudding Tossing competition will kick off at 1.30pm.
3.The Great Yorkshire Pudding Challenge
The Cookery School at The Grand | 3pm
A collaboration between The York Roast Co. and The Cookery School at The Grand York doesn’t sound anything less than mouth-watering, and thanks to the help of the York BID they are coming together to find the next ground-breaking Yorkshire pudding creation in their cooking competition.
The final will be held at The Cookery School at The Grand York from 3-7pm on Thursday 1st August and the winners will receive an overnight stay at the Grand for two, alongside a cookery course and £100 in The York Roast Co. vouchers. Are you up to the challenge?
4. The best Yorkshire selfie
St Sampson’s Square | All day
If you don’t consider yourself Yorkshire pudding throwing expert then maybe a selfie taking competition is your best bet at winning some brilliant prizes this Yorkshire day. All you need to do is take a seat in the York BID’s giant white-rose decorated deckchair in St. Sampson’s Square and take your best Yorkshire selfie. The winner will receive an overnight stay at The Grand York for two and the runner up will get to see a show at Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre.
5. Traditional Yorkshire Day readings
Micklegate Bar | 11.45am
Yorkshire day celebrates all of Yorkshire’s tradition. For culture and history buffs there is a chance to follow The Yorkshire Ridings Society while they walk the walls through York’s four bars to read the declaration of Integrity, which represents the four spoken languages in York since the Romans. This reading starts at 11.45am at Micklegate Bar.
York’s Town Crier, Ben Fry, will also be gifted his new bell and will be ringing it for the first time at 12.30pm on the steps of York Mansion House.
6. Regional final of the Young Traders Market
Parliament Street | All day
Even if you only plan for a stroll through town on Yorkshire day you can enjoy the food and drink stalls that will line Parliament Street during the regional final of the Young Traders Market, keeping shoppers and strollers refreshed with the added benefit of the Minster FM roadshow team providing free family games.
7. Live Music Minster FM
Parliament Street | All day
Have a listen to some live music through Minster FM who are putting on some of Yorkshire’s finest musicians as well as embracing all the other celebrations in Parliament Street. We can feel heaps of Yorkshire pride already. The music will start at 10am on Thursday 1st August 2019, followed by games and entertainment soon after.
BONUS WEEKEND EVENT
Busy on Thursday? Don’t worry – the celebrations go on into the weekend…
Haxby Memorial Hall | 10am-4pm
If you’re looking for something for the weekend, Haxby Memorial Hall will be hosting a Yorkshire themed family fun day on Saturday the 3rd August where there will be games, craft stalls, refreshments and much more.
